Unreal Engine 5.8 • Control Rig • Advanced Level

The latest version of our Control Rig & Fur Groom training is now available! Bringing the latest engine version into the existing Oscar rigging and Groom workflow.
The training focuses on the complete pipeline for creating, rigging, animating, and rendering a character with fur inside Unreal Engine 5.8!
From Character Rigging to Fur Groom
The workflow covers several key stages of a character production pipeline, from the initial character setup to the final result in Unreal Engine.
The training explores:
Character and skeleton setup
Skinning and deformation
Advanced Control Rig workflows
FK and IK systems
Custom animator controls
Forward Solve and Backwards Solve
Animation workflows
Groom creation and import
Groom Binding
Fur simulation and physics
Groom optimization and LODs
Real-time rendering
The goal is to understand how these different systems can work together as part of a single production workflow.

Control Rig in Unreal Engine 5.8
Control Rig is used to create and manage the character's animation controls directly in Unreal Engine.
The training goes beyond a basic rig setup, covering more advanced concepts such as custom controls, FK/IK workflows, procedural logic, and animator-oriented setups.
This makes it possible to build a character rig that can be used directly within Unreal Engine for animation and iteration.
Working with Groom and Fur
The second part of the workflow focuses on Unreal Engine's Groom system.
The process covers the different steps involved in bringing fur from a DCC such as Blender into Unreal Engine, including Alembic export, Groom import, Groom Binding, simulation, and optimization.
Unreal Engine's Groom system supports strand-based hair as well as different approaches for optimizing hair and fur depending on the project and target platform.
Updated for Unreal Engine 5.8
With the release of Unreal Engine 5.8, the training project has been updated to follow the latest version of the engine.
This provides an opportunity to explore the Control Rig and Groom workflows within the current Unreal Engine environment and to see how these tools fit together in a real-time character pipeline.
The training is particularly relevant for animators, riggers, technical artists, VFX artists, and developers working with character workflows in Unreal Engine.
