Sketchfab Changes Hands Again: From Epic Games to KitBash

Five years after being acquired by Epic Games, Sketchfab is once again changing ownership.

In July 2021, Epic Games acquired Sketchfab with a clear ambition: to bring its powerful 3D sharing and visualization technology into Epic’s ecosystem, particularly around Unreal Engine.

The acquisition also brought an immediate benefit to creators. The commission charged on Sketchfab Store sales was reduced from 30% to just 12%, allowing artists to keep a much larger share of their revenue.

This integration continued with the launch of Fab, Epic Games’ unified marketplace for digital assets. Launched in 2024, Fab brought together several previously separate marketplaces, including the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab Store, Quixel, and ArtStation Marketplace.

Sketchfab’s own store was eventually closed as its marketplace activities moved to Fab, giving creators a single destination to buy and sell digital content across Epic’s ecosystem.

But in August 2026, another major chapter begins. KitBash officially acquired Sketchfab and ArtStation from Epic Games, bringing them under the same umbrella as KitBash3D and Greyscalegorilla.

For KitBash, the goal is to build a broader ecosystem designed to support 3D artists throughout their creative journey. The different platforms can potentially cover everything from finding and creating assets to learning, showcasing work, developing projects, and building a professional career.

For Sketchfab users, the transition does not necessarily mean an immediate disruption. Existing portfolios, libraries, and workflows are expected to remain an important part of the platform as the new ecosystem takes shape.

It is also important to clarify that Fab remains part of Epic Games.

The acquisition of Sketchfab and ArtStation does not mean that Fab is leaving Epic’s ecosystem.

After five years under Epic Games, Sketchfab is therefore entering a new phase of its history.

With Sketchfab, ArtStation, KitBash3D, and Greyscalegorilla now connected under one company, KitBash has the opportunity to build one of the most complete ecosystems dedicated to the modern 3D artist.

The big question now is simple: what will this new chapter bring to artists and studios?
